UniSource Energy Service wants to connect its electric grid in southern Arizona with the grid in northwest Mexico by constructing new power lines and an additional substation in Nogales.
The project includes upgrading a 27.5-mile segment of UES’ existing 138kV transmission line that serves Santa Cruz County, and building a new substation on the west side of Nogales.
The substation would occupy an 11-acre site. It would be connected to the existing Valencia Substation by a new, approximately three-mile, 138-kV AC transmission line, and also connect to a new, approximately two-mile, 230-kV AC transmission line extending south to the U.S.-Mexico border.
Completion is expected by mid-2019.
